TAKE ADVANTAGE OF TAX SAVINGS
Are you 70 1/2 or older with an IRA? Congress has extended a charitable giving provision through 2011. You can instruct your custodian to transfer funds directly from your account to a public charity (such as the Burlington Land Trust). The donation counts against your Required Minimum Distribution, which of course is required by law, and it reduces your gross income at the same time! This may be more advantageous than taking the charitable donation deduction, especially for those who don't itemize, and even for some who do. Congress may not extend this provision beyond this year, so this may be a smart way to contribute and save tax dollars on your 2011 return. You may wish to consult your tax advisor.
