The Johnnycake Mountain Park Fall Foliage Hikes

Sunday, October 7th/3:00-5:30

Monday, October 8th, Columbus Day 1:00-3:30

Enjoy the beautiful views during peak foliage from one of the highest spots in Hartford County.  Climb rolling hills, cross grassy fields and travel along the Tunxis Blue Trail through the forest.

Hike Description:  The hike is in two loops.  The first one offers views of Johnnycake Mountain Park (1.3 miles).  If you’ve never visited the Town’s newest attraction, this hike is for you. Hikers can elect to stop their walk after this loop.

The second loop leaves the Park and follows the Tunxis Trail and includes some parts of the Johnnycake neighborhoods (2.5 miles). Both loops measure a total distance of 3.8 miles.

Historical information and details about the flora and fauna:  Karen Geitz will provide information about the Park and forests along the way.  Here are some questions she will answer:

  • Where does the name Johnnycake come from?

  • What is the connection between Smirnoff Vodka and Johnnycake Mountain?

  • Why are all those bird watchers sitting at the top of the Mountain?

  • What is that antenna on the highest part of the Mountain for?

  • What are the plans for the town park on Johnnycake?

What to bring:  Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, binoculars and/or hiking poles, if you’d like.  No dogs, please.  Preregistration is required.  Heavy rain cancels.
